lines and creases that form around the mouth are usually caused by gravity and a breakdown of tissues beneath the skin

Fat transfer involves extracting fat cells from the patient's abdomen, thighs, buttocks or elsewhere and reinjecting them beneath the facial skin. Fat transfer is most often used to fill in "sunken" cheeks or laugh lines between the nose and mouth, to correct skin depressions or indentations, to minimize forehead wrinkles, to enhance the lips, and for traumatic defects. There is always an over correction of the fat transfer since Dr. Clavin allows for a certain degree of absorption of the fat cells.

Fat transfer is done under local anesthesia with or without intravenous sedation. The entire fat transfer procedure is done in Dr. Clavin's operating room and lasts approximately one hour. During fat transfer, fat is removed with special cannulas and syringes and then replaced with another type of syringe through extremely small skin punctures into the appropriate areas about the face. Once removed, your fat is processed to remove excess fluids and then reinjected using another needle, which is placed just beneath the wrinkle. The fat transfer process may be repeated until the desired correction has been achieved. There are absolutely no scars and usually no sutures.

Fat Transfer is actually two procedures perfomed in a single session that lasts approximately 1 hour. The first procedure is fat harvesting. A small amount (about 30 to 60ml) of fat is removed from the locally anesthetized donor site. The anesthetic solution not only makes the procedure nearly pain free, but also minimizes the likelihood of later bruising at the donor site.
After the fat has been prepared, it is injected into the recipient site. The area to be augmented is first given a local anesthetic. The freshly harvested fat is then carefully injected into the desired area in very tiny amounts until the desired volume is reached. No sutures are generally needed at the donor or the recipient site.
